For now all we know is that Eleanor Vivian Loveless was born around 1870 in London and is now in her mid-twenties. Who her parents are and details of her childhood and adolescence are still unclear.
She's a natural scientist, namely a biologist (since that would have been the next thing I'd go to university for). Her speciality are birds of prey and she does extensive field work which requires quite a bit of travelling.
On one of those journeys she was told by an old man about "strange mechanical birds" living in the local forests which, according to the old man, are the last witnesses of a civilisation long gone. Fascinated by those tales she tries to find out more by talking to locals and hunting for mecha-ornithological finds.
As a true child of the era she has some bees in her bonnet like every respectable lady ought to have:
* she will never leave the house without having at least one bird feather somewhere on her clothes or accessories.
* she faints whenever she is served poultry at a dinner invitation
* offering her sugar at tea time leads to broken porcelain
